The establishment of a PhD School of mathematics and natural sciences at the Georg-August University in Göttingen was decided in July 2005. This PhD School is named "Georg-August University School of Science", abbreviation: GAUSS. The constituent assembly for GAUSS was on August 18, 2005.
Founding facultiesThe Georg-August University School of Science was founded by the faculties of mathematics, physics, chemistry, geosciences and geography as well as biology. A so called faculty doctoral program is contributed to GAUSS by each of these faculties. Each faculty program can be subdivided into several programs.
Associated facultiesAdditional faculties, referred to as associated faculties, contribute their scientific doctoral programs. Associated faculties are the Faculty of Agaricultural Sciences, the Faculty for Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology and the Faculty of Medicine.
Non-university participationFurthermore, the four Max-Planck-Institutes for Biophysical Chemistry, Dynamics and Self-Organization, Experimental Medicine and Solar System Research as well as the German Primate Center and the German Aerospace Center (Site Göttingen) are involved in GAUSS.
Doctoral degree Dr. rer. nat.Within the scope of GAUSS, the doctoral degree of "Doctor rerum naturalium" is awarded. At the request of a doctoral candidate, the degree "Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)" can be awarded, alternatively. The latter will be denoted by the supplement "Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences" on the doctoral certificate and the PhD diploma.
Enrollment of PhD programsFor the enrollment of a PhD-program to GAUSS, a faculty files a motion to the GAUSS board. The list of requested documents is also feasible as application form. It can be downloaded from this webpage's section "Programs".
